SIDE EFFECTS
Besides the obvious, tauntings and teasings by other males, there is
still a fair amout of sexest thought involved, when other men see fresh
cuts/burns etc. They assume that it is a womans problem and that the person
who does it must be gay, this is not true, many men who do it are heterosexual,
because self-harm is not limited to any set group of people. it is simply
a coping tool.
Sleep problems
Alot of men who have been mo*ested, or r*ped, have the following problems:
-
Often waking up in a panic.
-
Nightmares about the a*buse or mo*estation.
-
Not being able to get back to sleep after a nightmare.
-
Finding that having sex, or the thought of having sex, triggers them.
-
The slightest noise disturbs you.
-
Insomnia
For many of us, our problems happened at night, this has made our nights
a very unsafe time for us. you could find that when you try to rest you
are tensed up, and unable to relax. for some going to bed alone is triggering.
The ritual of going to bed for many has been violated and for this reason
it is sometimes hard to go to sleep, or wake up frequently.
Things to do, if you feel the urge to Self-Injure before bed:
-
Take a long, warm bath to calm yourself.
-
Play with bubblewrap (works wonders)
-
Listen to soothing music.
(Right now this list isnt very long, but it will get longer.)
A crisis can hit at any time it usually begins when:
-
You begin getting memories about what happened to you.
-
You start getting memories about what happened to you.
-
Something very scary happens like you are the victim of an assault. This
is scary in itself and can also be a powerful
reminder of the past ab*se or mo*lestation.
-
You begin to talk about what happened and it begins to 'hit home' how much
you've been hurt.
-
Things remind you of the ab*se, like having contact with the person who
ab*sed you, the death of the ab*ser, or
significant anniversaries such as birthdays.
-
You start to get other memories you didn't know were there. Other things
go 'wrong' in your life like relationship
break-ups, financial difficulties, problems
at work, and possibly social problems.
During a crisis you might feel:
-
Tense and freaked most of the time.
-
Like you're not safe.
-
Extremely numb, like you can't feel anything.(this is when most self-injure
to ground themselves.)
-
That you can't cope with things like you usually can. (agian, when
your more likely to si. )
